Models and celebrities have always been the subject of interest of an adoring — or not-so-adoring — public but with the growth of the Internet, paparazzi and gossip magazines, every move and every outfit of models and celebrities is front-page news. Make ups and break ups fuel gossip blogs and television segments. However, many people find themselves following celebrities and models to see and emulate the fashion of the stars.

No matter what the budget, magazines and websites devote multiple spreads to what clothes and jewelry celebrities and models are wearing. After any awards show, People magazine and online website features a gallery of the best and worst dressed celebrities. The website Celebrity Style Guide shows the average fan what celebrities and models are wearing, what designer created it and where to buy it. Even the gossip magazines that can be purchased at the supermarket checkout have sections showing how fans can purchase what the stars are wearing for less.

The same applies to what jewelry the celebrities and models are wearing. When a celebrity gets engaged, articles cover what type of ring and who created it. When the actress Cristina Hendricks got married last year, it was noted that the wedding bands were created by Tacori. There are also websites dedicated to the jewelry of the celebrities like Eve’s Addiction and the blog Sparkle Like the Stars. These sites get a lot of traffic because there is incredible interest in the celebrities and models of the world.

This intense interest can make it difficult for a celebrity or model to leave the house in the morning. The average person can walk outside and not worry about having a picture on the cover of a magazine sold around the country or world. But this is part of the package — celebrities and models get to be arbiters of style at the cost of a bit of privacy.

Our perception of celebrities is that they are “somebody.”

 They are people who are celebrated in the media (TV, movies, the internet) for some reason. The reason might be something significant, or quite honestly, it might not be very significant at all.

There are different classes of celebrities. Some celebrities actually do things that are important, like Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. Some are supremely talented like Barbra Streisand, Lance Armstrong or Tiger Woods. These people have talents that are notable; sports stars like Armstrong and Woods have books written about their athletic achievements. Streisand has made recordings and films. These people qualify as real, upper-echelon, certifiable celebrities.

Some celebrities, like Paris Hilton, are famous, but they don’t actually do very much. They are famous for being famous.

But there are still other types of celebrities. Sometimes a celebrity is famous because they are talented and also good-looking. When an extreme talent is combined with extreme good looks, the result can add up to a very glamorous celebrity. Someone, for example, like Jennifer “J-Lo” Lopez. J-Lo has a busy music career and also acts, but she is famous more than anything because she is quite pretty, glamorous, fashionable, and runs in circles that get a celebrity a lot of media attention. She is a well-dressed woman, and likely gets fashion ideas from all over — from Chanel to The Gap to Baby Phat.

At the farthest reaches of celebrity (the “supernova” type celebrity) are people who are really talented, (it helps if they have won an Academy Award or a Grammy) really good looking, and who do something unusual, like adopt a lot of children (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie), or get married a lot of times (Elizabeth Taylor). These “supernova” celebrities have so much going on, media, talent, and behavior-wise, they make it hard to look away. That’s the definition of a celebrity.

When you see how beautiful Tori Black is and then realize that she is a very tall model at 5′ 9″, you have to wonder how she ended up doing adult work as opposed to being a runway model! The woman is stunning, and she’s open to everything!
